Mikey Two-Times (PubCon Feedback)

Goodfellas… one of my most favorite movies of all time. If you have seen it, you probably remember the character, Jimmy Two-Times, who basically repeats everything he says…

If you haven’t seen it, there is a character named Jimmy Two-Times, who basically repeats everything he says…

The reason I bring this up is because I just replied to the “PubCon Boston Update and Feedback Request” for this past WebmasterWorld Conference

One of the questions was:

Which speaker did you like the most? Why?

And I answered:

Jim Boykin because he gave us real-life, actionable items to take-away.

My answers were short, because I didn’t want to spend too much time on the survey, so I’d like to elaborate here…

At the WMW conference, there were many different types of speakers. There were some who had very well prepared presentations and went through their speeches like clockwork. There were others who appeared to enjoy being up in front of the audience and were obviously the type who don’t mind the public speaking arena. And yet there were those who were noticeably nervous and would rather die than speak in public.

This brings to mind the Seinfield episode where Jerry states:

“Surveys show that the number one fear of Americans is public speaking… number two is death. Death is number two! That means that at a funeral, the average American would rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy.”

Now, while Jim speaks at many conferences, he actually fits best into the latter category. I think he may have even opened his presentation by admitting that he is not a very outspoken type of person. With that said, his presentation was, by far, my favorite because he was very up front and told it how it is.

Since he speaks at so many conferences, he makes it a point to present new information every time. I thoroughly enjoyed the candid nature and honesty of his presentation. He gave us a “behind-the-scenes” look into his actual link building processes.

A lot of his methods are similar to what I have already been doing… but it is nice to have this type of confirmation from an industry expert. This information is priceless for the beginning SEOer and I hope they left with some good notes. Needless to say, I did indeed take-away a few great points from Jim’s presentation.

On the other hand, the next question obviously was:

Which speaker did you like the least? Why?

To which my answer was:

I was disappointed with Mike Grehan because he gave the same exact presentation I saw at SES-Chicago… including the jokes.

…Which is why I titled this post “Mikey Two-Times.” Now, I don’t remember if I filled out a survey for SES-Chicago 2005, but I very well could have listed Mike as one of my favorite speakers…

Mike falls into the category of presenters who enjoys having the mic (mic/Mike… 🙂 ) in his hand. His presentation at SES was very informative for me and his anecdotes were intriguing. This is why I was eagerly anticipating his presentation at WMW.

Unfortunately, I may have gotten what I asked for… the exact same presentation! From what I remember, the PowerPoint was exactly the same, the story about his stick was exactly the same, his story about randomly meeting up with Bill Hunt in various countries was exactly the same, and even his sticky-note-on-the-botton-of-your-chair bit was exactly the same…

So, I will present a warning for future conference goers who see Mike Grehan speak for the first time: If Mike says that he placed a sticky-note under one of your chairs before the session began and the occupant of that chair must say why their site should be at the top of the SERPs in front of the entire audience, don’t panic! THERE IS NO STICKY-NOTE! Mike just gets a kick out of watching everyone’s facial expressions turn into a look of dread as they reach under their chair hoping they come up empty handed…

The main reason I post this is because I want to experience another Mike Grehan presentation for the “first time.” I doubt that he is an avid reader of my blog, but maybe someone will point him over…

… Oh yeah, I also gave him my business card so that he can email me some sort of report or something, but I haven’t gotten anything yet! Oh well, I’m sure he is busy travelling to another state or country.
