Flashback: Google Boondoggle

This is actually a post that I found while rummaging through my MySpace account. I first started blogging on MySpace and that only lasted a few weeks until I figured out how to get this site up. Since my MySpace blog isn’t public and not many peeps saw the post, I thought I’d put it up here.

This was originally posted on April 6, 2006…

<begin flashback>

What a day…

I’m eating Carl’s Jr. with my team in the VP’s office…

12:30p – Google calls: “Come downstairs.” We look at each other curiously… and finish up our grub.

12:35p – There is a pimp-ass white stretch Hummer waiting… We meet up with our Google Reps: “What’s up? Good to see you… get in and press play.”

12:36p – Watch personalized video: “The first rule of Enigma is: You do not talk about Enigma” (Oops…)

1:30p – Arrive at what appears to be an abandoned warehouse park by LAX.

1:40p – Another stretch Hummer pulls up… Another team from one of our companies…

1:45p – Another stretch Hummer pulls up… Yet another team from yet another one of our companies…

So, there are three pimp-ass stretch limos lined up among abandoned warehouses… this probably looks suspicious… We are kept in suspense… Where are we? What the hell are we doing?

1:50p – One of the garage doors open and the three limos pull in… we exit and congregate… introductions are exchanged… Five people in black suits and sunglasses give us instructions…

2:00p – The competition begins… Dodge Ball!

2:30p – Receive our next clue, hop back into the limo, watch another personalized video, drink a few Coronas…

3:00p – Arrive at Barnes & Noble, use our clues to find books, find more clues in the books, find a woman wearing brown glasses and a brown scarf per the clue’s encrypted instructions, receive another clue…

3:30p – Hop back into the limo, watch another personalized video, drink a few more Coronas, hassle our Google Reps…

4:00p – Arrive at Adventure Park, complete crazy ropes/obstacle course thingy at 30 feet off the ground – blindfolded half the time, receive another clue…

4:30p – Hop back into the limo, watch another personalized video, drink a few more Coronas, hassle our Google Reps, eat some Emerald Nuts…

5:00p – Arrive at Santa Monica Beach by the Pier, run in relay races, put together a puzzle…

5:30p – The competition portion is over… hop back into the limo, drink a few more Coronas, hassle our Google Reps, obtain interesting information…

6:00p – Arrive at the restaurant pictured in the puzzle – The Buffalo Club. Chill, drink Jack & Cokes, and eat the best crab cakes and tuna tartar appetizers that I have ever tasted…

7:00p – Sit and eat dinner… Warm Cornbread & Herb-Crusted Goat Cheese Salad with Field Greens, Red Onion, Bacon and Mustard Vinaigrette… Seared Pepper Crusted Beef Filet with Branded Currants with Blue Cheese Gnocchi, Leaf Spinach and Peppercorn Sauce… Pecan Pie Crumble Sundae with Vanilla Ice Cream and Bittersweet Chocolate Sauce (of which I only picked at the Vanilla Ice Cream part – I don’t do many sweets) The drinks continue flowing…

8:00p – The winner of the day’s competitions are announced – it is my team! We won our entire company a grill-out with In-N-Out Burger plus a specialized one-of-a-kind Golden Google Lava Lamp… The drinks continue flowing…

9:00p – Pick up our Google Gift Packs, hop back into the limo, head back…

10:00p – Arrive back at the office campus, say our thanks and goodbyes…

And to think that I thought Carl’s Jr. was going to be the best part of my day…

Thanks Google!

</end flashback>

Back then, I was working in-house for a global conglomerate. As I think back, it felt like every other day there was a boondoggle. That’s one of the perks that I miss out on now from being an independent consultant. Now I have to whore myself out to try to even get to conferences… 😛

Working for yourself does have its perks, though… More to come on that later!

Anyone else have any cool search boondoggling experiences?
